The legislators unanimously adopted a recommendation by the joint committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters and Women Affairs, Youths Development which sought for the amendment of the Trafficking in Persons Prohibition Act.
The panel led by Senator Umaru Dahiru (APC, Sokoto), recommended that “In practice these provisions are among the offences that are difficult to prove because of the penalty prescribed for them. Consequently, prosecuting officers have been unable to obtain conviction.”
He said: “This amendment is necessary because punishment of life imprisonment is too stringent.”
