Some people are wondering how a place meant for worship would turn to a shrine where many ungodly things would be carried out.

The shrine which covered several kilometres of land on the abandoned Ido-Oshun airport was owned by one Jacob Adebayo Oladele, who was believed to be the founder of the shrine.

The deputy leader of the shrine, Mrs Oluwaloni Oladele claimed that the place is a church and that they are worshipping God within the premises. She gave the name of the Church as Millennium Gospel Mission (MGM). The police say they have arrested the deputy leader of the shrine and some 22 other members. Members of the group do not worship in the day time but in the night. According to some of them, “the place is sacred and we believe in God”.

Our correspondent who was at the shrine with the police and the monarch of the town, Oba Aderemi Adedapo Saporoyo Akorede 1, gathered that the group have been in the place for more than 18 years before they were discovered.

Oba Adedapo who acted on the request of his subjects to probe the activities of the members of the shrine, invited the leaders of the group to his palace where he sought to know about the activities of the group.

Oluwaloni Florence Oladele who claimed to be the sister to the founder of the group, Jacob Adebayo Oladele, said the shrine was a place of worship for members, adding that the founder of the group transfigured and that he would soon reappear to come and rule the world.

Miss Oladele stressed that the spiritual leader of the group was “Jesus Christ” and that people come to the place from across the country to receive blessings.

The Sarki Fulani in the area confirmed to our correspondent that the place has been perceived by the public as sacred because they had been warned on several occasions not to near the place. He claimed to have suspected that strange activities were happening in the area and thus reported to the monarch.

While speaking on the issue, the traditional ruler of Ido-Oshun, Oba Aderemi Adedapo, said that the land where the group’s is using as a shrine is government land and that they took no permission from him.

He said that his subjects who were using the place to farm were driven away by the group by frightening and warning people of the community to steer clear of the area. The state Commisioner of Police, Mr Samuel Johnson confirmed the incident, saying that the command is investigating the incident.

He said that the suspects will be charged to court immediately after investigations.
