A timely intervention by about 200 youths in Argungu saved the town from the ravaging flood that engulfed its neighbours.

Matan Fada, is the river that hosts the annual Argungu Fishing Festival.

The river has received water thrice its capacity from the overflowing River Rima and River Niger.

The youths used sacks filled with sands to build the embankments at identified spots that showed signs of collapsing.

One of the youths, Bello Sahabi, told journalists that if they had delayed the measure the  rampaging water could have destroyed all the houses around the riverside.

The Chairman of Kebbi State Direct Labour Agency, Alhaji Bello said they decided to work with the youths in order to arrest the imminent collapse of the river.

“If it is left unattended it could have overflowed and submerged Argungu.

“The flood posed a serious environmental hazard to the area.”
