Women are key players when it comes to making of wood products at the Ningi Craft Centre in Bauchi State, an official has said.
In a News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) report, leader of the women wing’s association, Mrs Jummai Hamisu, said women are engaged in the finishing of the wood products valued at N1.8 million monthly.
Ningi Local Government Area over the decades has been famous for producing kitchen chairs, pestle and mortars among others.
She said: “As housewives, we complete the product by polishing, dying and painting them inside our compounds after they are crafted by the men at the work site. I have been in this trade for the past 25 years and have trained more than 50 women in it.
“I and my children are into it; the school age children assist me after school. We work together as such they have also learnt various designs and processes of the trade,” Jummai explained.
Chairman of the Wood Craft Association in the LGA, Mr Abdullahi Musa, said youth from the age of 30 year and below are engaged in various stages of the production, with over 30 workers.
He itemised the products of the centre to include mortars, kitchen seats, utensils, among others.
“Some of us inherited the trade from our parents, while some came into the business because of their interest and they are well trained now,” Musa said.
On their earnings, the wood expert revealed that each person makes about N2,000 daily adding that the products are patronised by buyers from Borno, Adamawa, Kaduna, Jigawa and Kano states.
