The President of All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Architect Kabiru Ibrahim, has said that Nigeria’s prosperity is currently under threat as a result of abandoning agriculture for oil for decades.
Architect Ibrahim disclosed this last week in a paper he presented at the 1st Daily Trust Agric Conference and Exhibition in Abuja, which was organized in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
The AFAN president wondered why a nation that was colonized because of its agricultural potential should suddenly abandon that for merely discovering oil and suggested several ways of enhancing agribusiness in Nigeria.
He said first and foremost, for the initiative to restore agriculture to its position as the mainstay of our economy to be effective, the typical Nigerian farmer must be encouraged to view agriculture as a business, which will ensure job creation, economic growth and national food security.
According to him, for agribusiness to work properly, “The Nigerian government must create the enabling environment comprising the provision of constant power supply, adequate transportation and potable water.”
