On that day, the late Japheth, like any other day, was hale and hearty. He did not show any signs of crisis in his life before setting out for school, that is, ECWA Ibbolari Primary School where he had his normal lessons for the day.

Weekly Trust gathered from the elder sister of the deceased that it was shortly after he got back from school at about 2pm in his family house at Pantami Quarters in Gombe, the state capital, that he reportedly committed suicide. He was the third in a family of five.

According to her, when Japheth got back home, she was away. On her arrival, she met him resting on one of the chairs in the house and he even welcomed her back. She said the next thing she could remember is that he carried a stool to their mother’s bedroom, but that that action of his did not make her suspect anything like that.

After about 20 minutes, their eldest sister asked to see him because she wanted to send him to the market. When she was told that he was inside their mother’s bedroom, she went there. But to her chagrin, when she got there, she found the room in darkness. She said she immediately became confused.

Continuing her narration, she said on opening the windows of the bedroom for light to come in so that she could see what was happening, her blood froze at what she saw. It was the remains of her younger brother dangling from a rope knotted to the ceiling fan of their mother’s bedroom.

Weekly Trust learntthat she started shouting for help, but before the good Samaritans arrived, Japheth had died. Weekly Trust further learnt that it was at that point they all discovered that the late Japheth used the rope of the window blind in their mother’s room, together with the stool he’d carried from the sitting room, to execute his plan.

“I was terribly shocked by what I saw. I could not believe my eyes. I didn’t even realise when I started shouting for help. I’m still confused,” she stated.

His mother whom our reporter was informed only left home for a few hours to commiserate with a neighbour over the death of a family member, got back home to meet the sad spectacle. All efforts to get her to talk hit a brick wall as she was still obviously dumbfounded.

The Gombe State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abdullahi Kamba, confirmed the incident and said investigations were ongoing to find out what must have prompted the young lad to commit suicide.
