A lecturer with the Department of History, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Professor Alkasum Abba, has said regional politics has continued to undermine Nigerians to go beyond their proscribed regions and take rational, scientific and political decisions, especially with regard to the presidential election.

He stated this while delivering his lecture titled, ‘Contemporary Nigerian Politics and the Ghost of the Politics of the Independence Struggle’ at a public lecture organised by the Arewa House Centre for Research and Historical Documentation at the weekend.

He said Nigerians need to end this type of politics, disengage from regional political outlook and focus on the economic development, prosperity and the future of the country.

Abba lamented how war drums are beaten by some politicians with active media support prior to elections and giving the impression that Nigeria would collapse if they are ignored.

He said, “It killed the First Republic; it killed Sir Ahmadu Bello; it killed Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa; it killed Chief Akintola and many others.”

Abba said the way forward is for Nigeria to free itself from the problem of political incarceration imposed on the country by the British colonial government since 1946.
