The president of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees and treasurer of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Ibrahim Khaleel, slumped and died in Abuja on Wednesday.

He was also the chairman of the ongoing panel instituted by the Federal Government to investigate the top management of Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund over alleged embezzlement.

He had attended the 2020 World Decent Work Day organised by the congress in Abuja on Wednesday.

A close associate of the deceased, who preferred not to be mentioned, described his death as “shocking” and explained how it happened.

“The late comrade was hungry, sent his driver to buy food for him, and after the very short game, he sat and waited for the food, but on his return, the driver was speaking to him, but noticed that his response was not satisfactory.

“At that point, he collapsed and was immediately rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.”

Khaleel’s remains were buried at Wudil Cemetery, Kano, on Thursday after a funeral prayer held at the town’s central mosque.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari, in a statement by his spokesman, Garba Shehu, has condoled with the deceased’s family, the NULGE and organised labour over Khaleel’s death.

Similarly, Zamfara State Governor, Bello Mohammed Matawalle, in a statement by his spokesman, Yusuf Gusau, expressed shock, saying he was with the deceased at the Government House, Gusau, along with the Zamfara NULGE officials on Tuesday.
