Some supporters of Hajiya Rabi Ibrahim Shinkafi, a commissioner appointed by Governor Bello Matawalle, attempted to beat up a member of the Zamfara House of Assembly on Thursday.

Trouble started after Hon. Shamsudeen Hassan, member representing Talata-Mafara North constituency at the assembly, opposed the nomination of Shinkafi, asking his colleagues not to clear her.

He had said Shinkafi, who earlier served as a special adviser to Matawalle, ought not to be appointed a commissioner over her alleged poor performance in office.

“If the House is to screen her based on her previous performance, she will not scale through because she scored zero,” he said.

But some youths, who were angry over the remarks, asked him to shut up.

They charged towards him but the security personnel on ground prevented them from attacking the lawmaker.

After the incident, the assembly banned supporters of political nominees from attending its plenaries.

The Director-General, Press Affairs and Public Relations of the House, Mustafa Jafaru Kaura, in a statement, said, “Apparently not satisfied with the unruly behaviour of supporters of government nominees that usually escort them to the House for screening, the House has today resolved to ban supporters from attending its plenaries at the gallery.

“After much deliberations and debate on the matter by the Hon members, Speaker Nasiru Mu’azu Magarya while condemning the act by these hoodlums consoled with his colleagues and apologised to them for the disgrace they received from the political thugs.”
