The Oyo State Police Command has explained the murder of a traffic warden, Oluniyi Bamidele, by suspected commercial drivers at Orita Challenge Bus Stop, Ibadan, on Friday afternoon.

The command said the traffic warden was on his legitimate traffic duty when he was attacked by commercial drivers after one of them committed a serious traffic offense.

The command’s spokesman, Adewale Osifeso, who explained this to journalists on Sunday, said the erring commercial driver raised a false alarm which made his colleagues to attack the police officer.

He explained that acting on the false alarm, other commercial drivers attacked the warden and pushed him towards an oncoming commercial vehicle (Micra) at top speed which knocked him down and another Micra driver “deliberately drove over his helpless body which led to his death on the spot.”

Olafeso revealed that the command had commenced investigation into the incident, saying, “The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has been directed to leave no stone unturned in apprehending those responsible for the cold-blooded murder of the traffic warden for investigation and prosecution in accordance with the law,” while enjoining residents of the state to go about their lawful businesses without any fear of harassment or molestation as tactical and other crime prevention teams had since been deployed to the area.
