How Aminu Kano fought tax certificate saga

In separate interviews with Daily Trust in Kaduna and Yobe, Musa and Yusuf said they had to go to court in the Second Republic to ensure that the Malam Aminu Kano was cleared of allegation of illegal evasion of taxes by his opponents.
“We had to go to court to prove that Malam paid taxes. We have a similar case now but it will be very stupid for anybody to go to court to challenge Buhari’s qualifications,” Musa said.
The former governor said the accusation that the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) General Muhammadu Buhari hasn’t got secondary school certificate was a “groundless jealousy.”
“The issue on Buhari’s certificate is politically motivated and one without facts. It is stupid and shameful for anybody to doubt the educational qualification of Buhari.
“He has classmates who will confirm that he has got secondary school education.”
He said the constitutional requirement for contesting political office was secondary school education which the General had.
Also speaking, Khalifa Hassan Yusuf, who took over from late Malam Aminu Kano as the national chairman, as well as, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) in 1983, argued that the controversy was engineered so as to demoralise voters’ interest in the forthcoming general election.
Yusuf recalled that similar allegation of tax aversion was labelled against late Malam Aminu Kano.
“I am among the people that tendered his tax clearance at FEDECO in Lagos at 6 o’clock, that was when they were about closing the submission of application.
“This also happened to our gubernatorial candidate, Salihi Ilyasu when they saw he was going to win the election in Kano, that was why we replaced him with Abubakar Rimi who eventually won. “
He said Buhari rose to the rank of a General in the Nigerian Army and attended many courses in England, America and India.
“It’s a shame for the leaders to be playing politics with the most respected and disciplined institution like the Army,” he said.
“It’s only today they could see that Buhari doesn’t have the certificate, Buhari contested three times and INEC cleared him. So, people should know that it’s a political party that indicted him not INEC
“Let’s wait and see if Buhari will be disqualified, because its only INEC that could indict him. Or let PDP take him to court, and not to castigate him on health ground, wishing him dead or by raising the certificate issue.”
“Again, was it not Goodluck  Jonathan  who said that they are pleased when Buhari won the primary election, and now they don’t want him to contest. They are afraid” he said.
He advised that Buhari should move on with his campaign and avoid anything that will distract him.
“From all indication Buhari will win the election considering how he is accepted by Nigerians especially in the major cities, Port Harcourt, Kano and Lagos” he added.
