How aggrieved driver set traffic official on fire in Edo

An unidentified commercial driver has allegedly set an officer with the Edo State Traffic Management Agency (EDSTMA) on fire.

It was gathered that the incident happened on Friday when the EDSTMA official was directed to take the driver and the vehicle to the office.

The driver of a bus marked Osun FFE145XA beat the traffic light at Adesuwa Junction along Sapele Road in the state capital, but when he was stopped by traffic personnel, he refused to cooperate with them.

After his arrest, the official was directed to take the vehicle to their office and in the process, the driver stripped himself naked, took a keg of petrol from his vehicle and reportedly poured it on the official.

In viral video of video of the incident, a voice was heard, saying “the driver committed a traffic offence, and officers of Zone 2 Enforcement Team apprehended him and asked him to take the bus to their base but he resisted arrest and started fighting everyone.

“At the end, one of the officers was asked to take the bus to the base, the driver brought out petrol, strip himself naked, poured the petrol on the officer in the bus.  As we speak, the officer is receiving treatment in a hospital here in Benin City. The bus driver is on the run.”’

Efforts to reach the spokesperson of the EDSTMA, Roland Owolabi, were not successful as his line was unavailable.

When contacted the spokesperson of the Edo State Police Command, Chidi Nwabuzor, said he was not aware of the development and would brief the press as soon as he gets the information.
