How $1m intervention brought succour for Gombe pregnant women

Statistics have shown that the number of women accessing health facilities for Antenatal Care (ANC) has increased in Kwami LGA of Gombe State, following an intervention from China South-South Cooperation Assistant Fund (SSCAF).

North East Trust gathered that at a Primary Health Centre (PHC) in Dukul community of Kwami LGA, number of women visiting the facility for ANC have risen from 100 to more than 500 in one month.

The increase in the number of pregnant women accessing the services, to save mothers and their unborn children, was linked to a $1 million supports fund provided by the SSCAF.

Assistant Facility Manager at Dukul PHC, Ruth Musa, said the intervention had turnaround the health services and coverage in the area.

She said the intervention, which is still ongoing, was impressive, adding that workers are still on-site to conclude the facelift.

Ruth added that the facility had improved from almost nothing to a full-fledged PHC that is ready to deliver health services.

“We have enough drugs, especially in the ANC section, routine drugs, testing instruments are all available. It has made women to be more interested in coming for ANC as well as for delivery,” she said.

The Assistant Facility Manager commended the State Primary Health Care Development Agency (GSPHCDA) for the intervention, which was implemented by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

Also, at the PHC in Malleri community about 20 kilometres from Dukul village, the health facility has been improved from its previous decayed condition.

A staff at the facility, Mohammed Adamu, said the intervention had changed the lives of the people, calling for more support from the state government in the area of laboratories and manpower.
