House Committee on sports wades into rift over unpaid bonuses

The House of Representatives Committee on Sports has expressed readiness to help end the constant wrangling between the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) and national football team players over bonuses and allowances.

This was among the resolutions made by the committee during yesterday’s meeting with the leadership of the NFF at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.

The Committee and the Federation agreed to work together to find lasting solutions to the recurring issue of unpaid bonuses of all national teams.

When asked to explain the issues surrounding the non-payment of the Super Falcons players, the Federation president said the money owed the players would be paid as soon as the money is received from FIFA.

In a related development, the House Committee under the Chairmanship of Hon. Ekene Adams Abubakar, charged the NFF to immediately resolve the issues regarding the two affected State Football Associations (Plateau and Nasarawa) where Normalisation Committees were set up.

To make this possible, the Committee charged the football federation to adhere strictly to its statutes in resolving the crises that have bedevilled the two football associations.

“What we are simply saying following petitions received from the two State FAs is that the Federation should respect and go back to its statute to restore peace and order in Nigeria football,” Hon. Ekene Adams said.

Meanwhile, the president of the NFF, Ibrahim Gusau, has assured the House Committee that all the lingering issues regarding the State FAs elections will be resolved amicably within three weeks and would revert back to the House on the resolution.

In another matter of interest, the NFF told the House Committee on Sports that it was still investigating the case of  Malam Awalu Baba Jada who was suspended for all football related activities following an allegation of match fixing.

The NFF, therefore, assured the House Committee on Sports that the Bauchi State born football administrator will be given fair hearing before a final decision would be taken.

It will be recalled that in November 2022, Auwalu was caught on tape boasting about his ability to fix matches in the NPFL.
