HoR: Shagari, PDP to present 49 witnesses

Incumbent lawmaker representing Shagari/Yabo constituency of Sokoto state in the House of Representative and his party, PDP are to call 49 witnesses in the case they instituted at the Election Petition Tribunal against the APC candidate in the 2019 General polls, Abubakar Umar Yabo.

Shagari, who is a son of late President Shehu Shagari, got 24,932 votes to lose the seat to Yabo who secured 33,193 votes.

Shagari then filed a petition at the Tribunal, stating that Yabo did not score the highest number of lawful votes cast at the polls and that the election was marred by electoral irregularities not in compliance with Electoral ACT 2010 as amended.

At the sitting of the Tribunal, Counsel to Shagari and PDP, the petitioners, Mr Kelechi Ogbonna who held brief for Mahmud Abubakar Magaji (SAN), told the court that they indicated 95 witnesses in the petition but had streamlined it to 49.

Counsels to Yabo and APC, Bashir Jodi and Abdulhamid Zubair respectively,said they intended to call one witness each and Counsel to INEC, 3rd respondent, Abdulkarim Ibrahim, said he would present two witnesses.

Chairman of the Tribunal Justice Peter Akhihiero directed all parties to file their issues for determination.

The case was adjourned to May 17 ,2019.
