When City & Crime visited the Murtala Muhammed General Hospital where the patients were receiving treatment, one of the victims, Muhammad Sani Inusa (Babangida), whose hand has been amputated as aresult of the attack, narrated how the incident happened.
Babangida said, “I was sleeping in my house when a neighbour called and said hoodlums were knocking at his house and were about to break the door, threatening to kill him if they opened the door on their own.
“I didn’t know that some of them were near my house, so I came out to help my neighbour. Immediately I came out one of them stabbed me on my head and I fell down. They continued stabbing all parts of my body. I heard one of them saying, ‘Kill him, don’t spare him.’ When I realised they were targeting my head, I used my hands to block them, that was how one of them used a cutlass and cut my hand, including the bones, only the flesh was holding it.”
Narrating further, Babangida said he trekked some distance to seek help.
He said, “When I reached the main road, I slumped and that was how police saw me and brought me here. The doctors said my hand could not function again as the veins that circulated blood had been cut. The hand began to decay and that was why it was amputated.”
Another victim, Aliyu Usman, who sustained injuries on his head and other parts of his body, said the hoodlums thought he was dead and left him.
Usman said, “That hour I received a call and came out as usual. Unfortunately, I fell inside a gutter near my house and they came on me. They stabbed my head over seven times and also some parts of my body.”
Both victims lamented that they took all responsibilities of their medication and treatment, calling on government to support them.
Residents of the area also lamented incessant attacks by hoodlums, saying they now slept with one eye open.
Hamisu Abubakar, who spoke on behalf of the Ward Head of Kurna, said the distance between them and the nearest police station was far in case of emergencies.
He said, “This has been happening here, but this is the worst ever. It has led to one of us losing his hand. Honestly we need government to support us.”
When contacted, the Chairman of Ungogo LGA, Engineer Abdullahi Garba Ramat, said he was aware of the attack and that he even visited the victims in the hospital and paid for their medication.
He further said since his coming as chairman, he considered security as top priority given the security challenges faced by the surrounding communities and that they were recording success through the newly launched app, LURA, for reporting criminal activities.
He explained that, “We launched the application to ease our work of addressing the security challenges in the regions of the local government. We are deeply committed to end security challenges in Ungogo. Those culprits will be traced as we are already on the process to do that. They are not from our local government, they come in purposely to steal.”
The spokesman of the police in the state, SP Haruna Kiyawa, promised to find out about the incident and get back to our reporter.
