The vice-Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on sports, Hon. Muhammed Buba Jajere, has congratulated the Super Falcons on their qualification for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
After they walloped Cape Verde girls 5-0 in the first leg of the final round of the qualifying series in Abuja, the nine-time African champions on Tuesday had to fight back to defeat their opponents 2-1 in the return leg in Parsia to pick the ticket with 7-1 aggregate.
In his reaction, the lawmaker representing Fune/Fika Federal Constituency of Yobe State urged the players to look beyond the qualification to the trophy at stake.
He said as the dominant women’s team on the continent of Africa, the Super Falcons are always favoured to win the tournament.
Hon. Jajere, however, said the gap between Nigeria and other African countries has been bridged so the Super Falcons must be ready to deploy their A-game to reclaim the title they lost in 2021.
“I congratulate the Super Falcons on their 2024 AWCON qualification. They deserve commendation for making us proud.
“But they should put the ice on the cake by reclaiming the WAFCON title. So, I urge them to shift attention to the tournament proper,” said Jajere.
The Super Falcons finished fourth at the 2022 edition which was won by South Africa in Morocco.
The 2024 edition of the competition will be held again in Morocco beginning from August.
