Newly promoted Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side, Sporting Lagos have secured a Naija Super 8 semi final ticket after defeating Katsina United 1-0 tHURSday at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos

The Lagos-based club who have remained unbeaten in this tournament after securing two wins and one draw started the game on the front foot creating several chances.

Sporting FC, however, broke the deadlock in the 35th minute when Silas Nenrot beat his marker to calmly slot the ball home.

At the restart of the second half, Silas who had become a thorn in the flesh of Katsina United, tried his luck to double the lead in the 53rd but his effort went over the bar.

Katsina United who seemed helpless managed to soak in the pressure and nearly drew level in the dying minutes with Ibrahim Yahaya seeing his cross parried by Agbor Ekoi.

Nazifi Yahaya had an empty net to direct his header into, but mysteriously missed the chance as Katsina United crashed out of the competition.

However, in a twist of fate, Remo Stars whose hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals wasn’t in their hands, have their neighbours, Sporting Lagos to thank as the victory paved the way for them to remain in the tournament.

Sporting will now face Akwa United today in the semi-finals while Lobi Stars battle Remo Stars ahead of the finals on Sunday.
