The Director of Organisation of Nigeria Hockey Federation (NHF), Tunde Popoola has solicited government’s assistance in providing facilities for the game of hockey in Nigeria.
Popoola said in an interview in Abuja on Sunday that what is slowing down the progress of the game in the country had nothing to do with the quality of players or administrators, but the lack of facilities.
“We are not asking government for money, but for their support in terms of providing more facilities, equipment as well as coaches.
We need their support, because the game cannot grow as we expect it to, unless these facilities are made available,” he said.
The Secretary of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) recalled that hockey competed with football in the 60’s and 70’s during his playing days.
“If we can have one Astro-turf pitch in each state of the country, I can tell you with all confidence that football will have a good run for its money,” he said.
