‘High rate of unemployment fueling insecurity in Nigeria’

A businessman and socio-economic specialist, Kingsley Obiukwu, has identified the high rate of unemployment as the main cause of insecurity in Nigeria.

Obiukwu, an hospitality expert, made this submission as one of the discussants at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Youth Speak event, themed “From Protests to Constructive Engagement: Conversations with Young Nigerians, about Nigeria”, which held recently at the UN House, Abuja.

The event also had the Deputy Secretary General of United Nation, Amina Mohammed; Nigeria’s Minister of Youths and sports, Sunday Dare; Nigeria’s Minister of Women Affairs, Dame Pauline Tallen, youth leaders across Nigeria and in the diaspora who lent their voices to the concerns of the nation and ways to improve the lives of the Nigerian people.

Speaking on unemployment, the astute businessman expressed sadness over the high rate of unemployment in the country.

He also preferred strategic solutions on how to improve the lives of the Nigerian people with emphasis on the youths.

He noted that unemployment was responsible for all forms of security challenges in the nation.

“Unemployment fuels terrorism, robbery, kidnapping and all forms of security challenges in the nation.

“The risks posed by unemployment are enormous and detrimental to the society,” Obiukwu said.

He also cited the Nollywood movie ‘Rattle Snake’ as a relatable example of what happens when the youths are not engaged positively.
