Herbalist, 1 other remanded for raping, setting victim ablaze in Kwara

A magistrate court sitting in Ilọrin, the Kwara State capital, has ordered the remand of an Ibadan-based herbalist, Sultan Ojuwoni Atakoro and one Olaitan Ibrahim Olalekan at the correctional centre over alleged rape and arson.

The suspects were arraigned on a five-count charge of criminal conspiracy, unlawful trial by ordeal, rape, causing grievous bodily hurt by dangerous means and attempt to commit culpable homicide.

The offences, the police said,  contravened Sections 97, 214, 283 and 229 of the Penal Code.

According to the Police First Information Report (FIR,) Atakoro who is also very popular on the social media, “serially raped and set ablaze a 21-year-old girl, Firdaus Jimoh in his shrine, in Ibadan, Oyo State, conniving with olalekan and one Omowumi and her children who were at large”.

Trial magistrate, Kolawole Aluko, did not take the plea of the suspects when the FIR was read to them, saying that that the court lacks jurisdiction on the matter.

He however ordered their remand and adjourned the case till January  17, 2024 for further mention.
