Heifer International has launched AYuTe Africa Challenge in Nigeria, a national competition offering young entrepreneurs the opportunity to pitch for investment in their agritech solutions to boost the incomes and productivity of Africa’s smallholder farmers.
This challenge, which kick-started on the 17th of August with the launch and submission of applications, is one focused on addressing the problems of hunger and poverty. Winners of these challenges will receive a cash prize of US$20,000 to invest in growing their agritech start-up.
According to Heifer International Country Director, Rufus Idris, he said the challenge is open to youth-operated local start-ups that have launched an agritech business in the last three years.
He added that these companies must be based in Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda or Zambia and should have developed a tech solution to address smallholder farmer challenges with strong potential to scale.
“We are excited to announce and kick-start the AYuTe Africa Challenge Nigeria with a starting cash grant of $20,000 to the most promising young agritech innovator in Nigeria. This is in line with Heifer’s strategic goal of unleashing the hidden agricultural treasures among African youths,” Rufus said.
Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture, Ms. Abiola Olusanya, commended Heifer International for the initiative.
