Heavy setback for Falcons as Oshoala pulls out of AWCON

Super Falcons and FC Barcelona forward, Asisat Oshoala, will be out of the remainder of the ongoing 2022 Africa Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) in Morocco due to a knee injury, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has announced.

The federation made the announcement in a tweet on Wednesday.

She got injured in the Falcons’ 2-1 loss to the Banyana Banyana of South Africa in the team’s opening group game of the competition.

The striker strained a “medial collateral ligament” and will leave for Barcelona on Thursday where she’s expected to undergo further tests on the knee and the extent of her injury will be revealed.

“Sad news from Super Falcons camp: Top striker Asisat Oshoala is out of the ongoing WAFCON 2022. She sustained a Grade 2 Medial Collateral Ligament strain in the game against South Africa. She is due back in Spain on Thursday. Get well quick, Asisat,” NFF tweeted.

The 27-year-old is Nigeria’s star player at the tournament but was disappointing against the Banyana Banyana as the Super Falcons lost.

Her injury is a major loss for the Super Falcons who will have to look on to other members of the team for the goods.

The Super Falcons have other attacking options in Gift Monday, Uchenna Kanu and Ify Onumonu.

The Falcons will continue their 2022 AWCON campaign against Botswana on Thursday before Burundi in their final group game on Sunday.
