Heavy rain moves Lagos Open tennis finals to Monday

The heavy downpour in Lagos and its environs throughout Sunday compelled organisers to shift the final matches of the 2019 Lagos Open Tennis Championship to Monday.

The matches of both the men and women’s singles were supposed to start by 1pm, but when the heavy downpour refused to stop well past 5pm, the ITF Supervisor, Patrick Kamuhia in conjunction with the Local Organising Committee (LOC) announced the postponement of the finals which will now begin by 10am today with the women’s singles between Indian Riya Bhatia and Nastja Kolar from Slovenia.

This will be followed by the men’s singles final between Aldin Setkic from Bosnia and Calvin Hemery from France.

Meanwhile, Governor Babajide Sanwolu-Olu of Lagos, who was to declare the tournament closed yesterday will still perform the same function at today’s finals.

He will be assisted by the Minister of sports and youth development, Sunday Akin Dare.

The Lagos Open Tennis, which was formerly known as the Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis, is an annual tournament organised to celebrate the sitting Governor of Lagos State since the administration of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
