Health laws top agenda as doctors convene in Sokoto

Health minister Isaac Adewole is billed to address a general conference that will consider operationalising the National Health Act and health crisis in the face of insurgency as doctors in Nigeria and abroad convene in Sokoto from Tuesday.

The conference is to start with a medical mission of free specialist treatment and surgeries for indigent residents of Sokoto underserved by health facilities, according to a statement by the Nigerian Medical Association president, Dr Kayode Obembe.
“[NMA] will be giving back to the society through this noble charitable venture in the three senatorial districts of the state,” he said.

Sokoto state governor Aminu Tambuwal and Kebbi governor Adamu Aliero, alongside His Eminence Muhammad Abubakar III, Sultan of Sokoto, are billed to attend the conference to consider Nigeria’s position on Sustainable Development Goals and the role of medical professionals in administrative positions in a democracy.

“Through the deliberations on this theme, NMA would once more review, reset and reiterate the standards of performance it has set for her members in elected and appointive political positions in the land,” said Obembe.
