Some concerned health experts have called on the federal government to review the 1861 Abortion Law so as to stop unsafe abortions which they said lead to avoidable deaths of uncountable girls and women in the country.
A gynecologist, Dr Steve Lemadoro; the Executive Director of Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC), Dr. Abiola Akiode-Afolabi and the Ipas Nigeria Country Director, Lucky Palmer made the appeal at a sensitisation training for journalist in the southwest geopolitical zone.

They maintained that access to comprehensive abortion care services in government and private health facilities would prevent avoidable deaths of girls and women resulting from unsafe abortions.
The training was organised by Ipas Nigeria on the implications of Nigeria’s 1861 Abortion Law and the Global Gag Rule (GGR) on the health of the women in the country.
Lemadoro and Akiode-Afolabi in their various presentations highlighted the dangers of unsafe abortions and called for collective action for the review of the abortion law in line with international and regional legal frameworks Nigeria has ratified.
