Umana, who has been detained at Ipaja police station, was said to have raped the nine-year-old girl (name withheld), a Primary 5 pupil in the school library a fortnight ago.

The  39-year-old headmaster of Moeka Nursery and Primary School, Promised Land, Ayobo.

The parents of the little girl got suspicious when the girl returned home that day bleeding from her private part and crying with pain.

She told her parents that while reading and waiting for other pupils to attend extra lesson after school hours, the suspect came to meet her in the library and pressed her down on the floor, raping her even while she cried and shouted for help.

According to her, the suspect used his left hand to cover her mouth so that people would not hear her cry, raped her and then gave her N100 note, begging that she should tell no one.

The 39-year-old Umana, who hails from Akwa Ibom State, in his own confessional statement, said after the school had closed on that fateful day, he went in search of the girl and found her in the library where he used Vaseline to rob her private part in order to have easy passage.

The suspect, a graduate of the Universal College of Technology, Osun State, said he was employed in August 2007 as a teacher in the school.

Although he initially denied the allegation, he later opened up after doctors at the General Hospital, Ikeja examined the girl and came up with the report that the girl was raped based on the blood and male semen found in her.

Police Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba told Oodua Trust that most cases of assault occurred in parties close to each other, people who the girl-child usually looked up to.
