Handball: Nigeria opens Nations Cup campaign against DR Congo

The women national handball team of Nigeria will kick-start their campaign at the 2021 Africa Nations Cup on Sunday in Yaounde, Cameroon against the Democratic Republic of Congo.

A delegation of 16 players and officials left Nigeria at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on Friday and arrived in Yaounde in time to prepare for the opening match.

Although before the team departed for Cameroon, they were outclassed 46-28 by an Abuja-based male national division 1 side, Arise Stars from, the Nigerian girls are exuding confidence ahead of the opening match.

Team Captain, Dorathy Nyagh told Trust Sports that they are highly motivated to do the country proud in Cameroon.

She said after 20 year absence, the team is back and will leave no stone unturned in getting a ticket to the 2021 World handball Championship in Spain.

“We stayed together in camp for long and we are fully ready. The minister of sports has done everything to motivate us.

“It is not going to be an easy task but our target is the World Cup ticket. We want to win the opening match and continue from there.

“We are aware that victory in the opening match will propel us in the remaining group matches so we would do everything to beat DR Congo,” she said.

After today’s opening match, the Coach Rafiu Salami ladies will play the host Cameroon before taking on Kenya in the last group match.
