Handball League: Safety Shooters of Abuja eye top position

Safety Shooters experienced player, Michael Akande has said his side is ready to better their previous records at the Prudent Energy Handball Premier League.

Speaking after Safety Shooters defeated Lagos Seasiders 25-23 at the ongoing league at the indoors hall, MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, the former international said his side has never won the league as they either place second or third.

The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, sponsored handball team is therefore aiming to dethrone the defending champions, Kano Pillars handball club.

“Safety Shooters have never won this league since its inception.  We either come second or third, but this time around, we mean business and we hope to go beyond the second position, which means we are looking to win the league this time around.

“You must have watched our performances of late and you have seen how determined we are to win this league. It won’t be easy but we are capable,” he said.

Meanwhile, Day 4 actions in the female category saw Benue Queens defeating Desert Queens 28 -17.

In the male category Plateau Vipers stung Confluence Stars in a 28-24 victory while De Defenders defeated Niger United 28-23.

In the same vein, Defender Babes on Monday won their first game of the league.

The ladies of the Nigeria Civil Defence, who lost their two previous matches, did all they could to outscore youthful Adorable Angels and win 36-33 in what pundits call the battle of Youth and experience.

The COVID-19 delayed national handball league is definitely living up to expectations as the competing clubs are giving a good account of themselves.

At the end of the league, one club each in the male and female categories will be relegated.
