Nigeria’s Women Handball Team on Tuesday stumbled in the opening match of the 2021 Africa Women Handball Nations Cup as they suffered a heavy defeat against DR Congo.
The match watched by few fans at the Yaoundé Multipurpose Sports Complex in Cameroon saw Nigeria capitulate 16-35 to their Congolese counterparts in the first match of Group B.

The Coach Rafiu Salami tutored side couldn’t match up to the DR Congo girls and paid dearly for some missed opportunities as the first half ended with a 18-3 score line in favour of the Congolese.
The Nigerian girls came back with determination to reduce the deficit as they scored 13 goals in the second half but their opponents ensured they scored 17 more goals to cruise to victory.
The National Women Handball Team will next play Cameroon on Thursday.
Nigeria are participating in their first Africa Women Handball Nation’s Cup for the first time since 1994.
Eleven teams are taking part in the championship after Algeria withdrew from participating.
The tournament which began yesterday will end on June 18 with four teams securing the World Cup tickets.
