The U-13 football team of Gwagwalada Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has emerged champions of the FOSLA Academy scholarship tournament.

The annual tournament which is sponsored by a former president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and proprietor of FOSLA Football Academy Karshi, Alhaji Sani Lulu Abdullahi, is used for selection of teenagers who are naturally endowed in football to benefit from the school’s scholarship.

Gwagwalada Area Council won the tournament for the first time after they defeated Kuje Area Council 4-2 on penalties after 2-2 in regulation time.

It took the victorious Area Council over 10 years to win the coveted trophy.

Reacting to his team’s victory, the coach of Gwagwalada, Thompson Ojukwu expressed joy that after losing three times in the finals, his wards were able to break what was becoming a jinx.

“I am very happy that we have been able to win the elusive trophy this year. This is the first time Gwagwalada is winning this trophy. We had featured in the finals for three years without winning.

“We thank God that we were able to do it this time around. My joy will be complete when we have more players getting the scholarship,” said Ojukwu.

On his part, Lulu congratulated the teams and expressed optimism that those that the players to be selected will surely excel in the academy.
