One policeman was feared dead, another missing and four others injured during an attack in Effium Community in Ohankwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
They were attacked alongside members representing Ohaukwu North constituency in Ebonyi Assembly, Chinedu Awo, who also sustained bullet wounds during the Sunday attack by gunmen.
The injured officers and the lawmaker are receiving treatment at Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki.
They were reportedly attacked at Effium where they went in search of a kidnapped Consultant handling the Ebonyi ring road project who was abducted alongside four others three weeks ago.
They were said to be on their way when the hoodlums opened fire on them.
A police officer at the state’s command headquarters confirmed the attack, describing it as ‘dark Sunday’ for the command.
