No fewer than 8 persons lost their lives in the early hours of Sunday in a suspected rival cult attack in Rumuelumeni, Obio Akpor local government area of Rivers state.
The chairman of Rumuelumeni Community Development Committee (RCDC), Sunny Odum, told a radio station in Port Harcourt that rival cult groups had engaged themselves in a gun battle in the early hours of Sunday.
He said that one of the rival cult groups had invaded the homes of another group where they shot and killed 8 persons.
He called on residents of the area not to panic about the incident and go about their normal business saying that the law enforcement agencies have been deployed to the area to avoid breakdown of law and order.
The spokesman of Rivers State Police Command, Nnamdi Omoni, said only three persons lost their lives in the incident.
Omoni said that members of Demgba Dewell cult group had engaged another cult group, the Icelanders in a gun battle.
He said that eight persons lost their lives in the incident while three other persons sustained bullet injuries.
Omoni said that men of the Command have taken over the area to avoid a reprisal attack.
