Unidentified gunmen on Monday shot two police officers in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
One of the gunmen was shot dead in an encounter with policemen attached to a popular night club located along Woji Road in the state capital.
The incident occurred Sunday night.
An eyewitness told our reporter that the gunmen invaded the club in search of someone, when they unexpectedly met policemen manning the place.
The eyewitness said that the gunmen immediately opened fire, killing two policemen on the spot, while a policeman, who was shot in the hand retaliated.
He said that the injured policeman shot dead one of the armed men and recovered three rifles belonging to the two policemen that were killed.
When contacted the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Nnamdi Omoni, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said that the two policemen lost their lives during the incident.
Omoni also confirmed that the incident occurred at the night club located along Woji Road, opposite the recent collapsed seven-storey.
Omoni explained that the gallant policeman currently receiving treatment in the hospital also recovered two rifles belonging to the Nigeria Police from hoodlums.
