Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers, yesterday, killed two police officers and abducted the Chief Medical Director of Irrua Specialist Hospital, Prof. Sylvanus Okogbenin, in Edo State.

It was gathered that the incident happened at Ramat Park, Ikpoba Hill area, of Ikpoba-Okha local government of the state when the CMD was on his way to Benin for an official engagement.

Two other persons in the convoy, whose identities could not yet be ascertained, were said to have been shot in their legs during the kidnapping.

It was learnt that the deceased officers, who were in the convoy of the CMD, were killed by the gunmen numbering over four during the operation. The CMD was then reportedly whisked away.

It was further gathered that during the shooting, stray bullets from the gunmen also hit a passer-by.

Two assistant directors of the same hospital were alleged to have been kidnapped last week and released after payment of ransom.

Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of University Teaching Hospitals, Research Institute and Associated Institutions of Nigeria, Irrua branch, Comrade Emmanuel Igiechi, who confirmed the incident said the union would protest against insecurity in the area.

He said the incident showed that staff of the hospital were being monitored by hoodlums and called on security agents to strengthen their presence in Irrua and its environs.

When contacted, the state police spokesman, DSP Chidi Nwabuzor, confirmed the story, saying investigation has commenced.
