GSAA induct 25 ‘Child Olympians’ into athletics academy

The Gombe State Athletics Association (GSAA) has inducted the first set of academicians into the Gombe State Athletics Academy during a program at the conference hall of Government Science Secondary School, Gombe.

Winners of the track events at the concluded first Gombe State Inter-primary Schools Athletics Championship, the inductees were presented with appointment letters before an audience of teachers, headmasters, games’ masters, and representatives of Gombe State Local Education Authority, State Universal Basic Education Board, Gombe State Sports’ Commission and state Ministry of Education.

In his address, the Chairman of Gombe State Athletics Association, Alh. Ahmed Shuaibu Gara Gombe stated that the academy was established in fulfilment of the pledge he made at the closing of the Championship to establish a platform to support and nurture the talents of the young athletes.

“The first set of academicians,” the Chairman said, “will comprise 25 young athletes, the first three winners of the 100m, 200m, 300m and 4×100 m races. The academy will take some responsibility for the academicians’ welfare including nutrition, healthcare, training and academics as they are being groomed to develop their God-given potential. Parents are hereby urged to grant the needed cooperation to ensure these children grow to be champions.”

In the same vein, the Gombe State Football Federation in collaboration with the Nigeria Football Federation NFF has organised a two-day training for 102 coaches and 52 teams across the state.

The Gombe State Gov. Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya in a courtesy visit by the organizers commend the F.A for organizing such training adding that no country would develop without sports.

Yahaya who was represented by his deputy Manassah Daniel Jatau, also expressed happiness with NFF’s choice of Gombe to train the grassroots coaches.

“Gombe is ready to partner with NFF and any stakeholders for boosting sporting activities that impact knowledge to younger ones,” he said.
