Growing unemployment worsening Nigeria’s insecurity, says Peace Corps

The Peace Corps of Nigeria (PCN) has identified growing unemployment rate in the country as a major challenge that has escalated the current insecurity in the country.

It also said the menace is one of the challenges making peace-building efforts look unachievable in the country and other African nations, adding that it was high time the phenomenon was addressed.

The National Commandant of the Corps, Dickson Akoh, stated this in Abuja at the weekend when he played host to the delegation of the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, Ghana, on a courtesy visit.

Akoh said the ugly trend must be frontally and effectively tackled by African leaders because of the huge negative effects on their teeming youths, insisting that the only solution was to meaningfully engage the youths.

Speaking during the visit, Akoh said the corps has been making efforts to redirect the energy of the youths in Nigeria into productive ventures for nation-building.

Earlier, the head of the delegation, Air Commodore David Akrong, said the visit was to seek collaboration with relevant ministries, agencies and some selected organisations, adding that the delegation was on a tour to some selected African countries.
