Group slams Police over attack on Ortom

A justice sector organisation, Citizens United for the Rehabilitation of Errants (CURE) has criticised the choice of words by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris against the governor of Benue State over the herdsmen-farmers clashes in the state.

The group said it was shocked by the description of Governor Samuel Ortom as “a drowning man” by the Force Public Relations Officer, Moshood Jimoh in a television programme on Tuesday.

In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Sylvester Uhaa, CURE described the police PRO’s comments as “shocking, unprofessional, unethical and irresponsible,” adding that the comment is similar to the statement by IGP, the Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan Ali in the crisis.
He said the IGP’s statement that the Benue and Taraba killings was as a result of communal crisis and the Defence Minister’s comments that it was because of the anti-grazing law, was not surprising.
"What is surprising, however, is that Moshood Jimoh, the IGP and the Minister of Defense have forgotten the primary purpose of the office they are holding, that is, to protect lives and properties and maintain law and order.
"But I agree with Mr. Moshood Jimoh that Ortom is indeed a drowning man. But he is not the only one who is drowning. Millions of Nigerians across the country, and indeed the entire nation is drowning, Jimoh Moshood, inclusive. God save us," he added.
