Group sensitizes women in LGAs with high COVID-19 cases

A Sokoto-based Non-governmental organisation, Freedom for Life Initiative, has embarked on sensitization campaigns against Corona virus in local government areas with the highest number of cases in the state.

The campaign is targeting women who are most vulnerable.

Speaking at the campaign in Wamakko local government area on Monday, the Project Director of the group, Hassan Muhammad Ladan, said the women would also be sensitised on gender based violence.

According to him, women would be enlightened on the need to strictly adhere to COVID-19 protocols and to report cases of violence to the appropriate quarters.

He noted that many people, especially women, were ignorant of its (COVID-19) symptoms as such they would not know whether they contacted it or not.

“They can’t differentiate between COVID-19 symptoms and that of mild cold. This is why we embark on this campaign,” he said

On the gender based violence, he said there were many cases of violence against women and children, and commended the state government for its new law aimed at curbing the menace.

He also thanked UNFPA and the Sokoto state government for their support to the campaign.

Some of the women, who spoke at the seminar, said they were more equipped now on how to prevent the disease.
