Group organises summit against sexual abuse of young girls

A group, Protect the Precious Foundation, has organised a one-day summit in Umuahia, Abia State, to tackle sexual abuse of young girls in the country.

The summit tagged ‘Hey Girls, Can We Talk?’  which attracted girls between the ages of 12 and 20, was used to highlight and discuss issues like rape, early marriage and poor education of girl-child in the society among others.

The summit also served as a platform for girls, parents and caregivers to open up on their experiences on sexual abuse and how to define the best approach towards protecting the girl-child in the society.

The convener of the summit, Mrs Norah Okafor, in her address explained that her foundation was concerned about the poor handling of sexual abuse of young girls in the society, especially in Abia State, noting that lawyers, doctors and civil societies have been engaged by her foundation to lead the crusade.

Mrs Okafor regretted that slow pace of trial of arrested rapists and other offenders is a major factor fueling abuses in the society.
