A group, Centre for Excellence and Performance in Governance (CEPG), has commended the micro-zoning of the position of deputy speaker of the House of Representatives to the South East.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) recently announced that the position had been micro-zoned to the zone and that Abia State member-elect, Hon Benjamin Kalu, has been penciled down for the position.
Reacting to the development, a youth-based organization, Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL), stressed that it was insulting to zone such a position.
The group in a statement signed by the president-general and publicity secretary, Hon Goodluck Ibem and Comrade Okey Nwaoru, respectively, submitted that Kalu still has his victory being contested and cannot represent the Igbo nation.
According to them, while the political goal and aspiration of Ndigbo are beyond the post of the Senate President, “we cannot identify with Benjamin Kalu, not to talk of endorsing him to represent the political interest of the entire South East as a federal parliamentarian holding the post of the deputy speaker.”
In its reaction, CEPG in a statement on Tuesday signed by Henry Onyema Madubuike and Johnson Monday, its Convener and Publicity Secretary respectively, said APC rewarded loyalty by micro-zoning the position of deputy speaker to the South East.
“In the whole of the South East, pray, mention just one person who stood in the line of fire, among the National Assembly Candidates of the APC, more than Benjamin Kalu. That of Abia is even more glaring. Benjamin Kalu clearly showed he is a man and did what real men would always do: standing up for what they believed in, even when open threats to their lives on daily basis was becoming a recurrent decimal. Who defended Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Abia State more than UTABIRI GBURUGBURU, Benjamin Kalu?
“The APC has its machinery on ground, following up and measuring the performance of it’s Members and thus, far too above the imbecilic vituperations of gutter clout chasers. Political participation must not be reduced to crass imbecilic innuendos as the APC is humbly called to issue a note of warning to these “Mama Put Groups”, whose stock in trade is throwing spanners to the wheels of Nigeria’s socio-political progress. The decision of the All Progressives Congress must not be further insulted.
“More so, loyal Party faithful respect the decision of their Party and must not continuously position themselves as modern day Nebuchadnezzar, who must have everything tilt to their egotistic favour before it is seen as right and once it does not go their way, would be categorized as an Armageddon against NDI IGBO and should be forced down everybody’s throat to either accept or quench,” the statement read in part
