Great Green Wall: Minister directs forestry dept to get involved

Environment Minister Mrs. Laurentia Laraba Mallam, who gave the directive, asked the three directors of forestry in the ministry to evolve a ‘Mallam Plan’ for the GGW project, akin to the ‘Marshall plan’ of the United States.
Mallam, who was on a visit to the department, noted that the content of the GGW project was 90 per cent afforestation in nature and wondered why the department would not be involved, especially given the huge manpower resources available in the department that can be deployed to complement what the Project Implementation Unit (PIU) of the GGW in the ministry was doing.
She promised to leave a significant and unforgettable mileage in the implementation of the GGW project which had suffered setbacks in the past.
Earlier, the Director of Forest Management, Mr. Simon Adedoyin, enumerated the achievements of the department to include establishment of Forest Remote Sensing/GIS Facility, the National Forest Information System and the harvest of 3,092 metric tons of invasive aquatic weeds through the use of 45 Water Weeds Community Committees (WWCC) in 25 states in 2011.
