Govt, vigilantes partner on school security

The Delta State government says it will partner vigilante groups to complement efforts of security agencies on insecurity in the state, especially in schools.

The Commissioner for Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, stated this Wednesday at Onicha-Ugbo while addressing newsmen at the Delta State Strategic Executive Retreat 2019.

He commended the gallantry displayed by a vigilante group, the Anioma Security Watch, in Issele-Azagba which foiled a kidnap attempt at a secondary school in the community on Monday.

The leader of the Anioma Security Watch, an independent neighbourhood security watch organisation, Henry Onwuamalieze, however, told Daily Trust Saturday that the government had not been encouraging vigilante groups and neighbourhood security watch.

He narrated how his men chased the kidnappers with an indigene and a student of the school who volunteered to guide them in the rescue operation but was killed in the gun duel.

Aniagwu, however, assured that the state government would encourage partnership and collaboration between vigilante groups and security agencies for effective policing.
