Govt relaxes curfew in Gombe metropolis

The Gombe State Government yesterday relaxed the 15-hour curfew it imposed on Gombe metropolis in response to the tensed security situation in some parts of the city.

The government had on Saturday at about 3pm imposed the curfew in Gombe, the state capital, to ease tension after a burial ceremony for eight Boys’ Brigade children killed by an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps turned violent.

The Acting Secretary to the State Government, James Pisagih, in a statement yesterday, said Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo had directed that the curfew be relaxed to 10pm.

“Reports received by Governor Dankwambo from security agencies in the state indicated that the hitherto tensed security situation has improved, therefore he directed review of the curfew to 10pm to 6am daily until complete normalcy is restored,” he said.

Pisagih urged the security agencies to ensure strict compliance to the directive and put more surveillance to flash points in Gombe metropolis.

He asked members of the public to go about their normal activities and daily businesses.

Our correspondent, who went round the metropolis, reports that normalcy has since returned to the town with motor parks, markets and other shops opening for businesses.

It was observed that security personnel had been deployed in strategic locations in the metropolis to monitor and respond promptly to any threat.
