Governor Umahi lifts curfew, ban on Okada operators, journalists

The governor of Ebonyi State, David Umahi on Tuesday officially lifted the ban placed on motorcycle operators in the state.

Although, he insisted that the ban on motorbikes will still be enforced along the boundary locations in the state, adding that 300 metres radius should be maintained in any of the state boundary locations.

He also listed the curfew he imposed on the state despite recording its first case of COVID-19 last Monday.

More so, Umahi apologised and pardoned the two members journalists who he placed on life ban from covering state functions and entering any government facilities in the state.

Chijoke Agwu of the Daily Sun and Peter Okutu of the Vanguard Newspapers respectively were last week banned by the State governor during a live broadcast.

Umahi made these known on Tuesday during his state broadcast which was to brief residents of the state on efforts being taken by the state government in curbing COVID-19 pandemic.

His said: “Also, we are lifting the 7pm to 7am curfew and ban on Okada in Ebonyi state but not at the boundary locations.

“The restriction of use of Okada and other means of passenger’s transportation, including the bike passengers vehicular movement there are still ban at the boundary locations, say 300 metre radius.”

Umahi further pleaded with people of the state not to take their bike near the boundary locations, adding that the law would catch up with any person found violating the law.

On the press, I directed that the unfortunate incident with the press was not intentional but am asking everybody to disregard what has happened.

“Because we are all partners in progress and let us work together. But I will advise that you please cross check information.

“I specifically asked that the SUN and Vanguard reporters be invited as a father when you beat a child with one hand you bring the child back with another hand”, he explained.

The governor has faced criticism from various quarters after he placed a ban on the two journalists.
