This was disclosed by the Katsina State Commissioner for Agriculture, Alhaji Sani Hamisu Makana.

The commissioner disclosed that the governor announced the slash in the cost of fertilizer to Katsina farmers at the 2010 launching of the sales of fertilizer in Bindawa area of Katsina state.

According to him, the Governor made the announcement of the sales of a bag of fertilizer to the farmers in the state at the cost of N1, 500 even as each bag costs the state government N6,000.

He said “It is not only the selling price of the fertilizer that is fascinating, but the mode of distribution. A total number of 53,200 metric tons of fertilizer were purchased for distribution to farmers in Katsina state. In this year sales, the mode of distribution is total departure from the old order”

According to him, the fertilizers were shared to all the 4,899 polling units in Katsina state.

He said “as the time that electioneering campaign is at the corner, the trend in Nigeria among the state governors most especially in the northern part of the country is to use project like sales and distribution of fertilizer to placate politicians and top government functionaries at the expense of the real farmers. But what was witnessed in Katsina state is a total departure from the trend”

The commissioner noted that “Governor Shema’s sole aim is to satisfy the public whom he has reiterated several times that he is holding public trust for them.

Meanwhile, “It was discovered that on assumption of office as Governor of Katsina state in the year 2007, Governor Shema in his commitment to implement people oriented projects, set up community development committee in all the 34 local governments in the state. The committee that has representative from each ward of the local government was made up of members that cut across political affiliation, traditional institution, religious leaders and opinion leaders in the society. The committee major assignment is to determine the peculiar need of each community for government intervention. The report of all these committees across the 34 local governments in Katsina state formed the blueprint of programme of action of Governor Shema administration.
