Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has approved the establishment of a sickle cell centre at the Murtala Specialist Hospital.

According to the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, during the 15th State Executive Council meeting at the Government House on Tuesday, an allocation exceeding N1 billion was approved.

He said the initiatives underscored the governor’s commitment to enhancing access to quality health care for all Kano residents, marking it as his administration’s second priority area.

Key aspects of the governor’s approval include an allocation of N165 million for the procurement of essential medications and welcome packs for newborns. Additionally, there will be provision for free maternal, neonatal, child health and emergency supplies, starting from the beginning of 2024.

The contract for completing the College of Nursing and Midwifery in Madobi was also re-awarded with an investment of N57 million to enhance nursing education and produce skilled health care professionals.

Furthermore, the Community Hospital in Kadawa, Gwale Local Government Area, will receive N61.8 million for completion, while the D-Ward of the Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital, Kano, will be renovated and upgraded, with N81.6 million allocated for the establishment of a specialised sickle cell unit.

“This unit will provide specialised care for patients with sickle cell disease, a prevalent health concern in the region,” he explained.
