Gov Sule forfeits two months’ salaries to pay NOUN land bills

Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has forfeited his June and July salaries to pay land bills for the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) permanent study centre in Lafia, the state capital.

He made the disclosure when the management of NOUN in Lafia paid him a courtesy call at the Government House, Lafia on Thursday.

He said, “Luckily for you, I have not been paid my June salary yet so they are paying me both my June and July salaries at the same time, therefore I will pay the bills for you out of my salaries for the two months.

“That will be part of my own personal contribution to the development of education. As I always say, I will continue to support education in every way that I can,” Governor Sule said.

The governor, while responding to a request to grant waiver on land acquisition charges for NOUN, maintained that he will not on one hand talk of revenue generation and at the same time grant waivers on land charges.

In his remarks, the Lafia Centre Director of NOUN, Professor Alachi James Atu, said with the institution’s philosophy of ‘Work and Learn’, “the university provides cost effective, innovative, affordable and flexible education to all Nigerians,” adding that the institution is supervised by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

A source told Daily Trust that the amount paid by the governor for the NOUN is over N1.3 million.
