Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has inaugurated a high-powered probe panel to unravel why local government councils in the state are unable to pay salaries of workers.
The six-member committee, headed by Mr Ishaya Agidi Awotu, who doubles as the chairman, Governing Council, College of Education, Akwanga, was inaugurated at the weekend at the Conference Hall of the Ministry for Local Government, Community Development and Chieftaincy Affairs.
The governor charged the panel to, among other things, investigate the truth or otherwise of allegations in the local government councils and development areas over non-payment of salaries, incitement of staff against the state government and over-bloated salary figures.
Sule expressed sadness that the local governments, which are supposed to ensure development at the grassroots, were failing in their roles despite the relative financial autonomy they currently enjoy.
“You must carry out your assignments diligently, devoid of any sentiment or favouritism,’’ the governor charged members of the panel.
