Managing Director of Sokoto Rima River Basin Development Authority, Engineer Buhari Bature has said the depletion of Goronyo dam’s water level is the worst seen in the dam in over 25 years.
The water level is noted to have depleted by 90 per cent of its installed one billion cubic meter capacity.
Speaking when he conducted Governor Aminu Tambuwal round the dam site, the SRRBDA MD attributed the prevailing situation to the shortage of rainfall in 2017, climate change and lack of desalting of the dam.
Bature noted that the problem had affected water supply to water board and irrigation farming in Sokoto and Kebbi states.
In a remark after inspecting water levels at the dam, Governor Aminu Tambuwal described the depletion as alarming.
“The reservoir of Goronyo Dam was constructed to hold one billion cubic meter of water but as we’ve seen today, the water in it is just about 100 million cubic meter. This has resulted in inadequate supply to the water board and in effect, we had to resort to rationing water to the people,” he stated.
He however said proactive measures had been taken to boost water supply to the people pending when the rains would come and increase the volume of water in the dam.
